This post is adapted from a transcript and since I sometimes talk like a 3rd grader, I apologize in advance.
Hey guys, I’m Dr Emil Tompkins. Let’s go ahead and talk about time because if you’re going to be able to achieve your goals to help you be healthy, you need the time to be able to do it, and I imagine for a lot of you are already thinking “I hardly have time to get through my day, how in the world am I going to have time to do something to change my health for the better?” Because so many times we challenge ourselves, we also put our health on the back burner so that we can take care of everyone else. The problem we have is that we so desire to take good care of everyone else. We let our health decrease. We let our body go, we let our energy levels just disappear, and then we wonder why we’re struggling and suffering until we get to a point where we’re not able to take good care of the family.
So if you want to be able to take care of the people around you, get yourself on the right track, so that you can continue to do it. Because there are so many times where I see people suffer and suffer, because they stopped taking care of themselves in order to take care of others. If you care about the people around you, that’s something you can do to take really good care of yourself. You’ll let the other see you take good care of yourself. So they want to take good care of themselves. That’s important. Now how are you going to find the time to do that? Well let’s talk about our time management principle and where it’s about creating solid yellow lines and this can be a challenge for for some, but if you’re able to do this, it’ll make a big difference in how you’re able to manage your time.
So the first thing that I want you to think about is one, think about the roles in your life, not the roles where you eat, but the roles that you play. So what I’m thinking about are things for me, I’m a chiropractor, I’m a dad, I’m a husband, I run a healthcare office. There are a lot of different roles that I have. There’s a lot of writing, and the content creation, that take us even beyond what we do there, and so there are a lot of different roles that I have, some roles are a lot more important than others. And so the first thing that I have to do though is recognize the different roles that I already have. Also, you know as a person who wants to be healthy. So now let’s go through that for you.
You have different, so write them down because the different roles you have can also take up the time that you have in your day. So take a moment. If you have your, 2020 new years guide, then go ahead and grab that, open that up and start putting that information in there. What are your roles for your Husband, Wife, Dad, or your Career. The things that maybe you do outside of your career?
Write down your roles and don’t be afraid to write down your goals. You’ve got to do it, so then once you’ve written down your roles, then what you want to do is, is when you’re driving, think about when you’re on the road, when you’re driving down one of the lanes on the road, between the middle white dotted lines, let’s say as you’re driving on the highway, you have the white dotted lines, and on those white lines, you can cross from one side to the other. Perfectly safe, as long as you’re watching where you’re going, but there are times on certain roads where you look to the left of you and you don’t have white lines or dotted lines. You have less yellow lines or solid yellow lines, and if you think about traffic, when you’re in those solid yellow line areas, what are you able to do? Are you able to cross over to the other side, and hang out in that lane? No, because you’ll die. You’ll eventually run into someone that’s coming after you, and you can’t cross those solid yellow lines, so what I want you to think about when it comes to your health, and when it comes to the goals that you’re setting, because each one of those goals are important.
You’re going to have to start figuring out where you can paint solid yellow lines so you can focus time on each of those areas. So let’s say you have your health section here, and we’ve blocked off time to exercise, let’s say between five o’clock in the morning and six o’clock in the morning. there’s something that’s important. If you’re going to accomplish that goal, you really need to paint some solid yellow lines around that five to six o’clock in the morning time so that you can dedicate that time. I know that time is for exercise and that’s all that time is for. Now. You may say, well, what about my writing time? or what about time with the family and those kinds of things. There are times where you’re going to have to figure out how you can really focus on one area, and it’s hard because if you’re a parent, if you’re a mom painting solid yellow lines around something may seem impossible because you feel like you have to multitask all the time. And in some ways you do have to multitask all the time, but one thing that I do want you to think about is, is that most of us actually don’t really multitask. We focus and focus on one thing. We focus on another thing. We may focus back on that thing, but we don’t actually multitask because when we’re actually multitasking for the vast majority of, of humans, the brain doesn’t handle that very well. So we have to make sure that we have really good quality focus time on the things that we need to focus on. So find time that you’re going to focus on your exercise, find time that you’re going to focus on your eating.
Maybe you get so busy that you just don’t eat, and then by the end of the next year, we’re gorging on whatever we can find because we’re so starving because we had such a long, busy hard day, so we schedule that time for eating between this time. I am going to use those times to paint those solid yellow lines around your roles so that you can focus on them. You will start to notice that you have more blocks of time then you thought, and then you’ll find that you have more time. I’m Dr Emil Tompkins, have a great day.
