What Stress Does To Your Body
First, lets talk about what stress does to your body. Lets go back into time when we were roaming the land hunting and gathering for food. What were our stresses? Hunting for food, trying to avoid being hunted as food are a few examples. Our body has been created to handle these stresses really well. When we are under this kind of stress, our adrenal gland kicks in, produces adrenaline, our heart rate increases, our blood pressure increases, blood flow increases to our arms, legs and eyes. This allows us to fight the attacker or chase after the food. We were created perfectly for those functions.
But our stresses today (kids, finances, work, family) aren’t happening in short bursts. They are lasting all day, every day and your body never gets a break. Major health problems will creep up over time including:
- Heart disease
- high blood pressure
- pain in any part of the body
And the list can go on and on and on. But that’s enough talking about what stress can do to you, lets understand how we can fight it.
It’s a system created called the IDEAS System for Stress Reduction
Today we’re going to focus on the first area of the IDEAS system. I (Identify). You want to identify the stress that’s in your life and also try to determine whether you are succeptible to stress related illness. Dr. Tim Lowenstein, a psychologist who has helped many people reduce stress in their lives, created a life stress test. The life stress test will go through various life situations and you’ll simply incidate where you fall on the scale. Different stressors are worth different amounts of points. So fill out the test and calculate your points and see how succeptible you are to stress related illness.
